A middle class background meant having enough money to take care of your daily needs but never a surplus to go on holiday, to live life to its fullest all the time. We would experience a sausage, chocolate or ice-cream once in a year. We would fake sickness so that we could be taken to the doctor who was based in Nairobi because that was one of the times we were guaranteed Chips and if lucky 1 sausage, that is if my mother bought into our fakeness.
We would carry lunch in a flask and it was normally the food we ate the previous night most of the time so when I got bored with packed lunch, I would break the flask. I knew my mum was not liquid most of the time so it would take her some time to buy another flask. In the meant time she would opt to bring us chips during lunch hour and we would eat in the car. I liked those moments. However, the breaking of flasks could not go on continuously because the words and the eyeing my African mother would give us was enough to shatter glass leave alone scare a frightened child.
Anyhow, as I grew up, my middle class child mind always wondered “cant one have all this delicious tasting foods and life all the time?’’
